When life gets busy, some things go by the way side and my blog last year was one of them. If you go back and look at previous posts, you can see that it had, in fact, been over a year since the last update. I am going to try very hard to do much better this year and update my blog once a week. My main goal is to provide the links to some of the sites that my students use and to post important dates that you need to be aware of. Please be patient as I navigate this blog and get reacquainted with how it works.

Stoddard County Scholastic Meet

On Thursday, February 19, several of our students participated in the Stoddard County
Scholastic Meet.  Our students represented our school well and we are very proud of
them all.  Those that placed are as follows:

4th grade:

5th grade:

Please note that school will be in session on Monday, February 16th.

Our Valentine's party will be held this Friday, February 13th, from 1:30-2:10. Parents are welcome to attend.

Mrs. Cox, Mrs. Townsend (our student teacher) and I have challeneged our students to learn the 44 Presidents, in the order that they served, by the end of February for 10 bonus points in Social Studies. Have fun and be creative!

Mrs. Angela Townsend is our student teacher in our classroom until March 13th. Mrs. Townsend is working towards her degree in elementary education. She is a wonderful addition to our classroom.

January Student of the Month

Congratulations to Austin Bollinger, our January Student of the Month. Our character trait for January was Perseverance - working hard and never giving up. Austin exhibits these characteristics in and out of the classroom daily and I am very proud of all of his hard work this year.

I hope this entry finds everyone safe and warm. I know that it has been a long week and has been extremely difficult for many and for some the struggles continue. I think most of the students enjoyed returning to a routine today and found some comfort in the familiar. Following are a few announcements for this week:

The PTO meeting scheduled for tonight, Monday, February 2nd, has been cancelled.

Progress Reports will go home on Wednesday, February 4th - please note that with all of the missed days there may not be many grades for some subjects.

Our party celebrating January birthdays will be held this Friday, February 6th (rescheduled from last Friday). Our party celebrating February birthdays will be held on Friday, February 27th.

my username and password that is. If you're like me, you have several things that you keep up with online and unfortunately you cannot use the same username and password for any of them. Some have to include letters and numbers and some case sensitive, ect. Well, it finally caught up with me - I couldn't remember what my password to my blog was and for some reason it was that easy to reset but I have finally gotten it done. I will hopefully be publishing my weekly newsletter on my blog and update it with my student of the month this past week. I will also put last month's student on the page as well since it was during my short sabatical (that sounds better doesn't it?). Thank you for being understanding.

I apologize for not updating the blog this week. The students and I have been working on incorporating centers into our daily schedule. The work the students are/will be doing in centers will be reinforcing those concepts in both reading and math that we have worked on throughout first quarter. They have performed quite well this week and I am proud of their efforts.

Due to a scheduling change, the book fair will be next week, October 14th-17th, instead of the week of parent/teacher conferences. There are extended times on a couple of evenings if you prefer to come to the book fair with your child instead of sending them with money. I will send those times home in a note on Friday. I will be taking them to the book fair as well during the school day.

Please remember that there is no school Monday, October 13th, in observance of Columbus Day. I hope everyone enjoys their three-day weekend!

We had a wonderful MAP trip on Saturday. The students were well-behaved and represented our district and community well. I was very proud of all of our students and hope to take my entire class next year!!! I have been stressing to our students that taking our time, reading carefully and answering questions completely makes a world of difference on their daily work and their tests. Today's assignments were:
Math: Multiplication Facts, Reteach 3-6, and Practice 3-7
Language: Practice 12
Reading: No assignment - we're working on narrative writing

Compound Subjects and Predicates

Today in Language the students went on a scavenger hunt of sorts. We've been learning about compound subjects and predicates. Each student had one piece of a sentence and they had to find their other half and then identify if their sentence had a compound subject, compound predicate or included both. I thought you might enjoy watching them learn as much as I did today!

Grandparents Night

Grandparents Night was a huge success!!!! I really enjoyed getting to meet each of you that were able to make it Thursday night. Thank you for all that you do for your grandchildren - they are all so special and such a delight to have in class. Hopefully over the next few days, although I am generally considered "technologically challenged," I am going to attempt to put a slide show of the pictures I took from Grandparents Night. I am so excited about the 2008-2009 school year! I know that its going to be a terrific year for all of us. In the coming weeks I will be working on developing this page to make it useful for all of us. I am going to try (this is my first attempt at this so please be patient) to set up links to sites the students can use to study at home. Hope to see everyone at Open House!!!!
